Fraud

Phishing

Phishing has become a very common term now, and has become synonymous with identity theft.

Criminals trick you into revealing personal information with the intent to gain access to your bank account or credit card account. Once they have access, your account will be easy money as they will then proceed to drain it dry in a matter of seconds. They often use urgent and 'official' emails to rush you into sending details, so verify any alerts or notices with your bank before you even click a single link provided in the mail.

Criminals need some way to cover their tracks, and what better tool to use than a desperate employee who just got laid off?

When people need money, they tend to snap up any deal that comes their way. Criminals take advantage of this by looking for despairing people and offering them a job transferring funds to an account halfway around the world. No matter how elaborately they explain it, the profession of money forwarding simply does not exist. Money transfer services exist for that purpose, and they do it legally to boot.

Pyramid scams

Another particular scam to be aware of is the pyramid scheme, where recruiting people is the primary way for you to earn money.

This scheme may sound good on paper, but will never make money in the long run. You will be forced to buy or invest in a 'product' until you slowly find yourself unable to recruit more people into the fold. Then you find yourself unable to leave the scheme, and you are suddenly losing money in the fees and payments rather than gaining money.

The general rule to protecting yourself from online money scams is to always remember the golden rule of trade. If it is too good to be true, then it probably isn't. Do not even click anything if it sounds suspicious, as you may end up losing everything over the 'net than actually earning money through it.
